I love my asr, but Im wondering about the SP. For years Ive been dying to test one out.
How are the filters in comparison to the asr-10. Hows the sequencer. I know about the sampler time. How do the pads feel...etc....
Any info guys?

They are really quite different machines...
Filters: the SP has only lowpass filters, with 4 fixed lowpass settings. They allow extremely bright sounds to be smoothed out a bit. The ASR has lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and effects that allow resonance, distortion, etc... You have WAY more tonal control from the ASR10. The filters are more precise allowing thousands of variations over frequency and time.
Sequencer: The ASR has an adequate sequencer in terms of features, but is prone to glitches and is not particularly intuitive. The 8 pattern tracks can be a bit limiting since you will normally only use those and not the 8 additional song tracks, which could have been better applied as 8 more pattern tracks allowing 16 total pattern tracks.
The SP is basically a 1-track.. but the delete-while-play feature alone makes it much easier to use than the ASR for sequencing. Also, quantize-during-play (AKA auto-correct), a repeat button (for drum rolls, hihats), and multi-mode for pitch and velocity make it far superior for drum programming. Since the hardest part of most hip-hop is drum programming, you can see why this machine is still valued (as is the Akai MPC).
Pads: pads on the SP are simple, rugged 80's drum machine pads. They don't compare to modern pads on the Rolands, and the Akai MPC. They're not luxurious, but they are functional and they don't stick as much as the MPC pads.
Overall, the ASR+SP1200 is a great combo since there is little overlap in function. I used this for years, with the SP sequencing and playing drums, and the ASR sequencing and playing everything else; I slaved the ASR sequencer to the SP.
You don't need an MPC in this rig necessarily unless you get more gear.

thanks alot. See Ive used a MPC60 and my asr-10. Same way ...slaved the asr to the mpc. I just hated using two machines. I like just using one workstation. And in that case I rolled with the asr, of course. But for some reason I keep checking ebay for a SP1200....One day I guess.

You cannot really use the SP1200 alone and be completely satisfied. 99% producers/beat makers today cannot acheive success (personal satisfaction with their music) with it alone.
