What´s up! I´m new to the ASR 10 Rackmount, but I had the keyboard version for awhile a couple of years ago. Now I´ve decided to really get into the ASR, but naturally I´ve been running into some poroblems and I´d need some advice from those who are really into the ASR.
1. Sequencing. Coming from an MPC & SP12 sequencing I´m very frustrated on the ASR´s internal sequencer. How the hell do cats like Alchemist and The ARE sequence smooth drums with triplet kicks and $hit with the ASR seq? - What are the basic methods: Should I put different drums on different instrument/seqencer tracks? Someone who makes good stuff on the ASR alone, please give me a little rundown on making beats with the sequencer! Do I have to Quantize everything afterwards and spread samples on different tracks.
2. With the Rack version I can only get sound out from the Instrument 1, but when I create a new instrument & sample stuff on there theres no sound audible no matter where I route the wavwsample ro track...? What am I missing? I know the ASR is the bomb, but there seems to be quite a learning curve for me at least, so experienced users please do help out if you can...

1) Sometimes sequencing at double time and quantizing will help you get the results you are looking for. So if you seq in doubletime (93BPM=186BPM).
2) Check and make sure your midi is setup correctly. I think there are two modes, Omni and poly. Try switching it around and see if either setting works. I had the rack a year or so ago but I can't remember. I am rocking the keys now so I am more help with that one.

As for tripplets, I would agree with mikedean on the double time and quantize. Although, with a good ear and hand, you should be able to play it out, then quantize with "parameters"... ie, when you quantize it will give you the option of quantizing the whole instrument/track, or you can just quantize middle C to C2 to 1/4t, 1/8t, 1/16t and so on...
There was a time when I didnt know about the quantize feature. I have to say, although my beats were not perfect, it sure trained my hand/ear co-ordination.
Good luck, this is a good topic-

I have to answer this in reverse.
First, to get the instruments 2-8 working, you'll need to set the midi mode to omni, better yet, set it to multi and then use the triggering device to switch between instruments (inst 1-8 are available on midi channels 1-8). Omni mode will guarantee souund from every instrument although you will have to assign sounds to keyboard ranges to avoid overlap (Edit->Pitch I think).
If you can get instruments working, then one way to built up singular tracks with different quantizations is to record basic 1/4note patterns (say kicks) on one track. Then, copy->instruments to the next track and use that instrument/track to record swing kicks (i.e. 1/8th notes with shift-track-by-clocks for swing/shuffle, or 32nd notes etc..). Then merge tracks from the swinging track to the main 1/4 note track. This can be done over and over again, and is basically the same as the MPC with a few more steps.
More sophisticated users probably just use event edit to get the right balance between unquantized and quantized sequencing.
