I'm using balanced cables from the main outputs on my asr to my Mbox. One output (which I just had replaced) doesn't work hardly at all when the balanced cable is plugged all the way in, but if I pull it out about 1/4 of an inch, it works fine (audibly fine atleast). Has anyone else experienced this? Should I try an unbalanced cable? I don't have any here and I'd have to go out and buy some.

I always use unbalanced cables from the ASR into a mixer and then into the MBox from there.
never had any problems like you describe from a balanced cable, but I have had from unbalanced cables - particularly when you are trying to use a mono cable in a stereo output, or vice versa.
have you tried swapping the cables to test if the output on the ASR is the problem or the cable itself is the problem??

I have switched cables to make sure it wasn't a cable issue. Infact, I just had that output replaced, so it is brand new, I will try unbalanced calbes plugged into that output to see how that does soon.
The only other problem I have with the ASR is that when I am playing a loaded instrument and the effects are set as 44k (or 41 k or whatever, the very first effect) i hear a popping sound coming out of the speakers, however on any other effect, everything is fine. before i replaced the outputs, it was a horrible grinding squeal that hurt my ears, now that they are replaced it's much better, but still unacceptable.
any thoughts?

Sorry mate, no idea
sounds serious though
Given you have changed the output and it hasn't fixed the probelm, just alleviated it a little, perhaps the problem is deeper inthe output route. Do you have the same effects problem via the headphone or digital i/o routes? Maybe a professional service/diagnosis would be the way to go.

balanced cables have a cleaner signal, for the most part, but always are less proned to being disturbed by cellular activity, etc. Just something to keep in mind!
