I want to get an asr 10 and i use an mpc 2000 right now. i heard that you can only store 8 sounds or 8 samples on the 8 pads and thats it? i also heard that you can put as many drum sounds as you want, putting them on different "layers" , can some one please clarify to me the situation with this and maybe how they break down their samples etc.. any help would be greatful. DONT SLEEP!

You can have 8 "Instruments". An instrument can be comprised of several (128??) wavesamples (sounds). These wavesamples are placed in layers and layers can be assigned to the keys on your ASR-10 or Midi controller. It has been a while since I messed with an ASR but I got one coming in the mail so I'll be getting back into the swing of it here shortly.

[glow=green,2,300]Yup, Mike's right. You can also stack instuments on top of each other in "layers", being that one drum kit might be the first 17 keys (left to right that is), and you could have Roland piano on the other 44 keys. Presets are useful for all of your instrument/sample combinations, which is great if you use it for live performances. I'm pretty sure you can do that on the MPC too Let us know how your ASR/MPC hook up goes, I'm intersted in getting an Akai of the sort [/glow]

BUMP... i just got my ASR.. its dope for sure. The MPC is killer, quick to learn and you can have beats on that thing in a matter of minutes.. BUT it lacks the sound quality and depth that the ASR does. i gotta couple questions for you.
1. how do i assign layers on each instrument (say i have 20 loose drum files on a floppy that havent been assigned yet).
2. whats a good program to change .wav and .snd files to the asr file type?
THANKS FOR THE HELP HOMMIE.. REALLY I APPRECIATE IT

#1: I myself am still learning the machine. I havent really had a chance to create drum banks, although that's next in line.
#2: Check out Awave. I have a sample disk im going to soon convert into ASR .wav format using this program, unfortunately my PC disk drive is crapped out :/ I'm getting a G4 (with a working drive obviously) and will finally get a chance to figure this out.
You also should check out the Covert ASR-10 if ya wanna master the board real quick. It helped me out a whole lot~
