I'll just say that if you're on a budget, the 16+ (if it's to be a lone sampler) is a good choice.
The ASR adds more memory, stereo sampling, some effects, an HD floppy, and it's generally newer so might be in better shape. Not worth the additional $$ in my opinion when money counts.
The EPS16+ sound quality also competes well with other machines, and I prefer it for drum samples over the ASR.
The original EPS can be had for very cheap but you will lose the 16-bit low noise sampling, effects are nada, and it's not the most powerful sounding machine.
Mind you, if you do heavy sample-based stuff it's not bad (people still use S950s and MPC60s with no effects and even less filtering capability), it has some grit that can't be had otherwise. I mean really weird things can come out of that box...if you like.
By the way the sequencer is pretty good on the EPS, it has tighter timing than the ASR. Not sure on the 16+ versus the EPS though, on sequencing/timing accuracy.

just got my EPS today.....i'm lovin the 12bit sound...definitely thicker than the mpc 2kxl i have and I actually like the thickness a lil more than when i had my ASR.....but I'd say the 16+ is probably best cuz it meets the middle ground on this issue....oh well, I'm lovin my samplability...hahah

yeah there's something to be said for the older samplers, they just sound more interesting. Although, I wouldn't compose a whole album on an EPS anymore, there nothing wrong with it when combined with other good machines.
