Yes you're right about that.. the sad thing about the EPS classic is it's analog-to-digital conversion is kind of 'dead' and if I'm not mistaken, quite noisy compared to other units.
The outputs (digital-to-analog) are 16-bit and not bad. I've made (16-bit) songs on the ASR and 16+ and loaded them into the EPS and I've been amazed at the difference in quality and loudness. The lofi feel disappears in this case to quite a degree. If the sounds you use are from an ensoniq pro-studio session, they may well be 16-bit after all.
