When I first started I just sampled right from my home stereo with RCA to 1/4" adaptors. I also used a portable cd player which I used a 1/8" stereo to 1/4" adaptors. You can get these from Radio Shack pretty cheap.
Your best bet though... is to sample directly from your computer if you can set it up.
I leave my soundcard output connected mono into the left of my ASR inputs, and my turntable connected to the right (i used an adaptor to keep both sides of stereo into 1 mono adaptor.)

just go to Guitar Center or MARS or Radio Shack and pick up a pair of 1/8" to 1/4" cables they should look like this.

A GOOD SOUNDCARD IS KEY!
IF YOU WANT YOUR SAMPLE TO BE EXACTLY AS YOU GET THEM FROM THE COMPUTER....USE A HIGH-QUALITY SOUND CARD!
THERE ARE SO MANY BUT IF YOU ARE JUST USING STERO.....FIND A STERO ONE BECAUSE THE FOLKS (SOME) WILL TRY TO SELL YOU A 24 CHANNEL JOINT WHEN YOU ONLY NEED STERO TRACKS!
HOPE THIS HELPS

depending on the soundcard you can also lose some elements from the recording. I have a great recording interface but i still opt to record directly to my ASR-10.
If I want to chop some vocals or stabs and do more precise work then ill record into my comp and use my wave editor.
