when you are sampling and you lower the sample rate, the filter cutoff rate naturally lowers as well. i was wondering if anyone knew more about it since the manual doesn't mention much. should i keep it off to keep all the lows, or play it safe and leave it at it's default setting for each sample rate.

Messing with the anti-aliasing filter will not do nothing to the low-end of the sample (at least in theory) unless you are sampling something with HUGE very high frequency content. The high end frequencies will fold and become aliased low end and will probably sound cool but incredibly strange. Lifting the antialiasing filters slightly will provide a little bit more high end at the expense of creating more high-end distortion.
